Skeins and balls are generally sold with a yarn-band, a label that describes the yarn's weight, length, dye lot, fiber content, washing instructions, suggested needle size, likely gauge, etc. A wale can split into two or more wales using increases, most commonly involving a yarn over. In knitting you are often counting your stitches and focusing on nothing more than the stitches being created and the count itself.
The thread used in weaving is usually much finer than the yarn used in knitting, which can make the knitted fabric bulkier and have less drape than a woven fabric. Double ribbing is the pattern is used for hems and borders for necklines or cuffs of sweaters, socks and mitts. If the fibers are first aligned by combing them, the yarn is smoother and called a worsted; by contrast, if the fibers are carded but not combed, the yarn is fuzzier and called woolen-spun.
