Like weaving, knitting is a technique for producing a two-dimensional fabric from a one-dimensional yarn or thread. Let's start with some basic patterns.
Variegated yarns can produce interesting visual effects, such as diagonal stripes; conversely, a variegated yarn may frustrate an otherwise good knitting pattern by producing distasteful color combinations. In spinning, the fibers are twisted so that the yarn resists breaking under tension; the twisting may be done in either direction, resulting in an Z-twist or S-twist yarn. As well, I like to be able to spread my work out and check my pattern for any mistakes and it is much easier to view when using these needles.
Circular needles are great for knitting sweaters or afghans. Various tools have been developed to make hand-knitting easier. Double-pointed knitting needles usually come in sets of four (US size 1, on right) or five (US size 8, on left).
