I think when people try to learn to knit they choose the wrong pattern and the wrong supplies. Anyone who has anything to do with knitting will know the importance of knitting yarns.
It is also best to use the basic knitting stitches, just knit and purl until you are use to knitting. I didn't know I had done something "wrong" at the time, but got many compliments on the distinctive nature of that sweater. Remember to use the knowledge of the yarn supplier so that you can get the best yarn for the job you have lined up.
This is particularly good as the pattern will be correct for the yarn being used. The lower red course is knit into the white row below it and is itself knit on the next row; this produces stockinette stitch. Other simple textures can be made with nothing but knit and purl stitches, including garter stitch, ribbing, and moss and seed stitches.
You watch it come to life as you go, and little by little, your knitting becomes reality. These few basic knitting instructions are the foundation of any project you will ever knit.
