Once you have cast on, hold the knitting needle with the cast on stitches in your left hand. In general, yarns become stronger with more twist (also called worst), longer fibers and thicker yarns (more fibers); for example, thinner yarns require more twist than do thicker yarns to resist breaking under tension. In the knit stitch on the left, the next (red) loop passes through the previous (white) loop from below, whereas in the purl stitch (right), the next stitch enters from above.
Although they are mirror images in form, right- and left-plaited stitches are functionally equivalent. This is the first row from your knitting instructions. You can even make some easy handbags, mats to begin knitting.
Even if you're a pretty proficient knitter, this isn't the time to learn a new technique or work with a skinny fingering-weight yarn that will take forever to knit up. Brainstorm, and figure out which way of teaching would be best for you and your students!
