It is not done like knitting on needles, it is done on your fingers. This bag need not be some expensive item any medium size cloth bag will suffice. The garter stitch is often referred to as plain knitting because every row is made by either a knit or a purl stitch.
However, such circular wales are possible using Swiss darning, a form of embroidery, or by knitting a tube separately and attaching it to the knitted fabric. This many take a few weeks depending on how large the blanket is supposed to be. I hope you could follow my basic knitting instructions.
You'll be amazed at how much faster the second, third, and fourth version of the same pattern can be. So, if you want to slow down, and find meaning in your life again, try knitting.
